UlasanAnime.com – The archetype of Jesus in modern pop audiovisual narratives is not an uncommon sight. These figures tend to evoke a certain mysteriousness, thus limiting their widespread use. Individuals who live outside conventional norms are perhaps the most frequent manifestation of this archetype.

Alanis Morissette’s portrayal in the film Dogma serves as a model for many other notable characters. Within Buddhist literature and other religious narratives, these individuals often exhibit traits that make ordinary people feel a particular way.
Beyond the question of how extraordinary Jesus was in real life, the imagery of Jesus has transformed into a trigger for a “savior-of-the-world-at-what-cost” scenario. Imagine a mysterious girl in an anime, her past hidden and unknown to anyone; she might stare intently into a book, gaze towards the horizon beyond crashing waves, or focus on a pebble. When a character attempts to engage her, she would say very little, if anything at all.

She might utter random statements that make no sense to the audience, yet these words could potentially answer every question one might have, and then some. She would weave plot threads together like a self-insert fanfic writer from hell. She might perform an Obi-Wan-like maneuver, or perhaps simply vanish when a fight ensues; or she could pull a River Tam-esque disappearing act. Such characters embody wisdom and foresight, are meditative and transformative, and possess an otherworldly surreal quality. They are invincible, even in death.
But where does our localized Jesus fit into a love story? Eureka 7 prompted this very question, and we are offered an answer that is not too dissimilar to Misuzu and Yukito from Air. It is reincarnated love.
Eureka’s transformation and Renton’s (admittedly in a very different manner) realization is as close to a positive retelling as one can get. The narrative is complete with them having children of their own. Fortunately, Renton does not have to turn into a bird; he has good company. Norbu comes to mind as the de facto Jesus figure; however, to stretch the analogy further, Norbu represents the God-head. Jesus could be equated to Holland (especially considering his relationship with Dewey). As for who embodies the Holy Ghost, that remains a mystery.
