The crucial element lies in the motivation behind engaging in community service. There are numerous reasons why individuals might choose to serve their community, ranging from a sense of duty and passion to political ideologies or even a desire for personal fulfillment.
Interestingly, this mirrors the concept of public nudity. For most rational individuals, going out unclothed is not a normal behavior. The exceptions typically fall into two categories: mental instability or when it’s simply the prevailing norm. Exhibitionists are often considered to have psychological issues. However, in contexts like spring break, nudist beaches, colonies, or certain tribal societies, nudity is accepted as the standard. While the former might be a debatable point, the latter is quite evident.
Observing the world, we see many charitable endeavors undertaken by ordinary people, with multi-billion dollar charities leading the way. It’s clear that there’s a benefit derived from these actions. One could argue that individuals who exhibit profound compassion towards those in need might be perceived as “crazy” for freely giving away what is rightfully theirs. In this specific aspect, it bears resemblance to the exhibitionist.
However, a community that collectively and publicly engages in service, fostering a healthy spirit of cooperation and willingness to donate time, effort, and resources to noble causes and assist the less fortunate, can also be a unified entity. It logically follows that it is more feasible and common for a group of people to spend a day building houses together, rather than a few isolated individuals attempting the same feat. Perhaps, when surrounded by others who share similar “crazy” ideas, one doesn’t feel as peculiar for thinking outside the conventional box.
I wouldn’t presume to know for sure—I myself am one of those “crazy” individuals.
