Earthsea Beyond

UlasanAnime.com – While “Tales from Earthsea” boasts an enchanting soundtrack and impressive dragons, it’s difficult to pinpoint its core strengths beyond these elements.

Earthsea Beyond

There's something sinisterly funny about this picture

Having recently viewed the DVD, it’s important to note that the full visual splendor Studio Ghibli typically delivers on a large screen with higher resolution might be somewhat diminished.

The film isn’t inherently bad. The male protagonist is a refreshing change, possessing a certain complexity. However, the rest of the narrative feels like a collection of common Miyazaki tropes assembled, at times, without clear logical cohesion.

Perhaps this is sufficient for its audience. Given the popularity of Miyazaki’s work, it’s plausible that a similar appeal exists for “Earthsea.” This raises a question about the nature of influence and adaptation.

There’s little new to be said about “Earthsea” that hasn’t already been widely discussed online. Topics such as the director’s relationship to Hayao Miyazaki, the father-son dynamic, the screening with the book’s author, and other meta-narrative details have been available for over a year.

In this context, “Earthsea” can be seen as a faithful adaptation of the original novels. This is neither a criticism nor a compliment, but rather an observation that it doesn’t necessarily elevate the Ghibli filmography in the way typical flagship features do. It’s worth remembering that “Howl’s Moving Castle,” despite its critical reception, also faced discussions regarding its fidelity to the source material.

A sense of balance is present, yet it’s overshadowed by a pervasive feeling of indifference. Compared to “Spirited Away,” “Earthsea” offered at least some level of entertainment. However, it lacks the artistic depth of “Spirited Away,” which is a significant statement coming from someone who wasn’t entirely captivated by that film either. For now, it seems prudent to avoid further comparisons with other Hayao Miyazaki works.
