UlasanAnime.com – The overall impression of “Piano no Mori” can be summed up quite effectively, as noted in a previous review. However, the experience of watching a film in a theater still holds a unique charm that cannot be replaced by home video or online streaming. A wholesome family outing to the movies remains a distinct pleasure, especially when the director is present to introduce the film, as was the case during a recent viewing at the Kennedy Center.

It is important to disregard reviews that do not capture the essence of the film. When discussing “Piano no Mori,” it’s almost impossible to ignore the character of the “Toilet Princess.” To do so would be akin to discussing “Nadesico” without mentioning Ruri, or failing to use the letters “f,” “u,” and “n” to spell “funny.”
While “Piano no Mori” may have its shortcomings, and without direct knowledge of the source material, it’s difficult to ascertain if this family-friendly cinematic adaptation is intended for comedic effect or if it strikes a fine balance between humor and heartfelt moments. It doesn’t quite fit the mold of an epic thriller or a gripping fugitive tale, and it’s even questionable if it qualifies as a slice-of-life story.
What is certain, however, is that “Piano no Mori” possesses a broad appeal. While some might find fault with the underdeveloped character arcs of more stoic individuals, such as Amamiya, the film excels in making the audience connect with the rest of its cast. It’s difficult not to feel a sense of endearment towards characters like Takako or Rei-chan. Despite their minor roles, serving as foils and mirrors to the protagonist, the film masterfully leverages their presence to its advantage.
Perhaps this is why the movie might feel somewhat superficial and unlikely to evoke tears, unless one shares a similar sense of humor that might be tickled by the antics of our “Toilet Princess.” She might even benefit from the addition of some rainbow-colored unicorns!
