UlasanAnime.com – This year has been an exceptional one for anime comedies. While there wasn’t a single standout title that reached the heights of something like FMP: Fumoffu, numerous excellent shows provided genuine laughs. At least, they did for me, and I tend to laugh quite a bit.
The anime I particularly want to highlight is Seikon no Qwaser. It shares a similar vibe with Yosuga no Sora, but without any pretense of seriousness. It notably lacks the convoluted drama of incestuous relationships and complicated romantic entanglements that characterized Yosuga no Sora. Instead, Qwaser presents a cast of peculiar characters engaging in bizarre and imaginative activities. The concept of characters walking through sex scenes, while perhaps intended as a humorous observation, felt somewhat expected, or at least not entirely out of the realm of possibility. However, elements like “boob hypnosis” truly pushed the boundaries of what one might expect.

This leads to an interesting observation: the potential to bridge the gap between what might be considered “awful” and genuinely comedic. It’s akin to how Fist of the North Star can be appreciated for its sheer absurdity and, simultaneously, for its genuine entertainment value. The lines between these categories have become increasingly blurred this year, with many shows that might typically fall into a more serious genre bleeding into outright comedy.
With offerings like Seitokai Yakuidomo, it’s difficult to fault other anime for exploring this comedic territory.
To conclude this point, 2010 has been an unusual year for anime comedies. I found myself laughing more at anime this year than I likely did in both 2009 and 2008 combined. This could perhaps be attributed to a weaker showing in comedies during those previous years. However, if you haven’t been laughing along with the anime I’ve been watching this year, it’s possible we’re not experiencing the same shows.
The unfortunate reality is that, apart from Qwaser‘s remarkable, hilariously over-the-top nature, there wasn’t one single show that truly dominated the comedy landscape. It was terribly, hilariously over the top.
