Cons, Pals, and Debacles

UlasanAnime.com – My maiden voyage into the world of large-scale gaming conventions has concluded, and I’ve gathered some insights worth pondering. These include observations on how “anime” elements manifest within non-anime convention settings, the distinct cultural nuances between different fan communities at conventions, and other related aspects. However, my initial experience at Origins was largely positive, primarily due to the enjoyable company of a group of old-school gamers.

I stumbled upon a rather impassioned post on Astronerdboy’s site, which serves as a fitting illustration of an ineffective DMCA takedown. Such actions tend to provoke widespread irritation, and I confess to feeling it myself. [Though perhaps not to the same extent as when Google AdSense flagged my site for violating their age rating policy, while still inundating me with promotional materials.] My primary issue with Astronerdboy’s takedown commentary is that while it touches upon the necessary efforts Japan must undertake to address certain long-standing problems I’ve previously highlighted—namely, the urgent need for improved SEO practices in English—the author appears to misunderstand the fundamental principles of copyright. Every time that distinctive green header loads, I can’t help but sigh, though this lack of understanding is, regrettably, common among many who receive takedown notices. Nevertheless, where there are widespread DMCA takedowns, there is also chillingeffects.org.

I am assisting Wah with the organization of a panel at Otakon. The panel’s focus is on notable “nerd spots” in Tokyo. I plan to offer prizes at some point during the session. Titled Otaku Hotspots in Tokyo, the panel might inadvertently function as a promotional tool for A-Button and Garten. Discussing this also ignites a desire to attend AWA to see ZUN. Furthermore, it brings back fond memories of an exceptional IPA I enjoyed last weekend in Columbus, as well as another IPA-hybrid I sampled there. And let’s not forget the coffee-based stout I had in Columbus – some truly remarkable brews were discovered.

Otakon has also released its list of fan panel winners, or rather, panelists. You can view the lineup here. Given the potentially overwhelming schedule at Otakon this year, I am hoping to secure a slot early on Friday. We shall have to wait and see how things unfold.

In contrast, Anime Expo’s schedule appears significantly more manageable. The major events I wish to attend do not seem to clash, with the exception of autograph sessions. Therefore, I will proceed with my plans accordingly.
