The aspects that “Ghost in the Shell” fans cherish most in the 1995 movie are arguably executed even better in “Stand Alone Complex,” particularly how the rest of Section 9 complements the Major’s actions.
Instead, the live-action film’s reliance on importing iconic imagery and set pieces from the 1995 movie likely only appeals to a niche audience of anime fans in 2017. This narrow appeal might explain why “Ghost in the Shell” remains a topic of discussion at all.
