ScarJo’s Ghost in the Shell: Faithfulness and Meaning

UlasanAnime.com – The ongoing discussion surrounding the live-action “Ghost in the Shell” film, particularly concerning Scarlett Johansson’s casting, appears to stem from a persistent Western fascination with Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 anime adaptation. This perspective suggests a reluctance to move beyond Oshii’s interpretation, even as the underlying themes may feel dated by contemporary standards.

While Oshii’s film is lauded, the ideas presented within it are arguably no longer cutting-edge in 2017. These concepts were already well-explored in cyberpunk literature by the time the movie was released. For a more relevant and in-depth exploration suitable for this era, “Stand Alone Complex” offers a superior avenue.

The nature of a television series allows for a more profound and detailed examination of these ideas, something a single feature film struggles to achieve. Superficially, neither the original “Ghost in the Shell” movie nor the recent Hollywood production has successfully conveyed such complex messages within the confines of a two-hour runtime.

This is not to say the “Ghost in the Shell” movie project was inherently a mistake or should not have been made. However, its failure can be attributed to the challenge of adapting Oshii’s film, much like how Oshii’s own second movie also faltered. While that sequel attempted an opposite approach by simplifying elements, the outcome was still unsatisfactory.

A more compelling Hollywood remake of “Ghost in the Shell” would have been a completely original endeavor. The aim should have been to address the fundamental issues present in Oshii’s original film. The aspects that “Ghost in the Shell” fans cherish most in the 1995 movie are arguably executed even better in “Stand Alone Complex,” particularly how the rest of Section 9 complements the Major’s actions.

Instead, the live-action film’s reliance on importing iconic imagery and set pieces from the 1995 movie likely only appeals to a niche audience of anime fans in 2017. This narrow appeal might explain why “Ghost in the Shell” remains a topic of discussion at all.

In essence, the argument is that Hollywood should have drawn inspiration from “Stand Alone Complex” rather than Oshii’s film.
