UlasanAnime.com – Last season, the anime Cells at Work presented a unique concept: personifying human cells as anime characters who interact based on their biological functions. For instance, the process of ingesting and breaking down foreign substances was depicted as a cell hacking away at a monster with a knife.

However, this particular depiction led to the author dropping the show. The digestive system was portrayed as a “volcanic pit of acids,” with no mention of beneficial bacteria, at least in the half of the series the author watched. This portrayal deviates from actual biological processes, suggesting a somewhat germaphobic view of the human body.
The author found this approach to be a rather “derpy” way to explain complex biological concepts, likening it to an overly simplified depiction of a medical drama like House. While the show highlighted cellular mutations occurring daily within an adult body, the author felt it overemphasized an “us versus them” mentality. At a microscopic level, the author argues, biological processes are simply biochemical mechanisms, and mutations are a natural part of evolution.
A more acceptable deviation from scientific accuracy, in the author’s opinion, was found in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (referred to as Senshun Butayarou). The anime’s depiction of Schrödinger’s Cat thought experiment was noted as being “90% there,” with the main omission being the “big fat quantum quality” of the concept. This quantum aspect is often linked to theories like faster-than-light travel and the creation of giant robots, as discussed by many young fans.
Despite this minor inaccuracy, the author believes that mass media should strive for greater scientific accuracy. Nevertheless, the author gives Senshun Butayarou a passing grade because the core idea of observation affecting an experiment was successfully conveyed. For a high school romantic comedy dealing with supernatural mysteries, using a thought experiment to explain how protagonists solve problems was considered a “classy take,” reminiscent of The X-Files.
The author acknowledged that Senshun Butayarou might have stretched the use of the thought experiment, but not to an extent that significantly detracted from the narrative. The author concluded by mentioning a backlog of anime from the fourth quarter of 2018 due to recent travels to Taiwan and Hokkaido, which also led to a hiatus in blogging.
The author also noted the recent emergence of “Thunder Thigh Takarada” and how fetishism integrated into character design could generate such a response, coinciding with the coincidentally good anime Gridman.
