However, as with any compelling mystery, certain elements warrant attention, even if they are the ordinary, everyday components common to all mystery narratives. The beginning, the setup, the eventual unraveling of the plot, the gradual reveal of the deception leading to the story’s conclusion, and the self-referential fourth-wall breaks—these are the aspects that elevate a mystery story.
In certain respects, the Higurashi anime also employs a form of narrative “cheating.” Its non-linear, non-sequential, and parallel alternate storytelling approach offers at least three distinct perspectives on the same initial situation. This can be likened to the Luftwaffe conducting three hit-and-run passes against Allied bombers, as opposed to a single pass, which could be considered an unfair advantage. Nevertheless, this method proves highly effective in circumventing the common pitfalls encountered by other adaptations that lack a similar format, such as a loss of momentum over time, poor pacing, and the difficulty of adhering to the source material while maintaining enjoyment as a distinct medium.
Ultimately, does this distinction truly matter? The series delivers a show that is profoundly defined by its form, and this form is so distinctive that it’s hard to recall any other show quite like it. Consider Elfen Lied; it doesn’t even come close. Higurashi doesn’t induce apathy; instead, it elicits amusement because, in close proximity to the sentiment of “OMG, that’s actually creepy,” lies the reaction of “HAHAHA, this is so ridiculous.” This duality is, perhaps, a positive attribute, as it maintains a degree of suspense and keeps the audience guessing. For this, credit is due to the original source material.
