For me, Otakon has become a sort of ritual. While I’ve come to accept that a significant part of my motivation for attending annually – this being my ninth year – is simply the momentum of tradition, it’s also undeniably a social gathering. I connect with a large group of familiar faces there.

It’s true that many seasoned convention-goers would agree that conventions, at their core, are about these social interactions. However, for fans, the experience can be quite different.
Furthermore, Otakon isn’t an experience that resonates with every single fan. It’s akin to watching Utena; some viewers are drawn to its exploration of lesbian themes, others to its surreal narrative, and some are captivated by its direction, art style, and music. Many more are there for the intricate drama and character development, and a portion even attend for the comedic elements.
Trying to manage a convention with over 20,000 attendees means that pleasing everyone is an impossible feat. The fact that I can discuss Otakon in such a detached manner highlights how jaded I might have become. Yet, despite this, I believe I can still find genuine happiness in the overall experience.
