Takagaki Ayahi’s Laughter and Tears

UlasanAnime.com – Takagaki Ayahi, a classically trained vocalist and an integral part of the seiyuu-idol pop group Sphere, possesses a unique charm that sets her apart. While her voice might not always be the absolute favorite for every Sphere fan, many would agree it is exceptionally good. Despite her relatively short career and a limited number of prominent “otaku” roles, Ayahi often finds herself overshadowed by her groupmates, who have achieved individual popularity in various ways.

There’s an engaging irony in this situation.

Ayahi seems to excel in the emotionally resonant anime projects produced by PA Works, with Tari Tari being her latest notable appearance. This role mirrors her performance in Fate/Zero, where she portrayed an earnest character who experienced both laughter and tears within a single episode, a feat she repeated in Tari Tari episode 6. While her acting prowess might not be groundbreaking, Ayahi’s voice possesses a distinct quality that makes it memorable, partly due to her selective appearances in shows. This uniqueness allows her voice to stand out, making it suitable for lead roles, a cappella ensembles, and even providing a memorable contrast to the comedic pairings of Noto and Hayami.

Her strengths are considerable, and her performances resonate deeply with fans, particularly those who support characters like Noe. However, my personal favorite Ayahi performance remains her portrayal of the mischievous character in Mitsudomoe, which might offer a different perspective on her range.

I admit I haven’t closely followed her solo singing career, or the limited extent of it. Even when exploring more ambitious genres like opera, Ayahi’s solo work, at best, comes across as that of a delightful, though perhaps conventional, performer. She is primarily recognized for her seiyuu idol status rather than for captivating audiences with her singing alone. While her vocal talent is evident, the question remains whether she possesses the exceptional quality and drive needed to truly shine as a solo artist. She may be capable of engaging a live audience, a feat not commonly associated with opera singers, but can she consistently command the attention of a large crowd? The answer remains somewhat elusive, even after the release of Sphere’s third album. Personally, I’m still undecided.
