The author aims to keep track of their viewing experiences, offering insights into each series’ strengths and weaknesses, and their overall impression.

Bookcover Scratchpad #1 Winter 2013

Two very important things that shouldn't be missing

The author begins by listing the anime they have watched, starting with Maoyu. They note that it was the only new anime that piqued their interest unexpectedly, attributing its initial appeal to its presentation. The author believes that a strong presentation in the first episode is crucial for animation, though the future outlook for Maoyu is uncertain due to what they perceive as “genre warfare.” A follow-up post is hinted at.

Next, Love Live is described as lukewarm. The author suggests this might be due to not watching much of the live shows, finding the approach to “2.5D” tricky. Despite checking all the author’s boxes element by element, the finished product doesn’t resonate. This disconnect, however, strangely intrigues them, leading to a contemplation of watching the live shows first.

Senyu receives a “pretty alright” rating, despite any potential controversies surrounding Yamakan. The author observes a growing trend of short anime, mentioning their continued plans to finish other short series like Poyo, Wooser, Kuromajo-san ga Toru, and possibly Yurumates.

Mangirls is found to have a language joke that quickly loses its humor. The author admits the initial joke was funnier than anything in the show itself. However, due to its short format, they don’t see much harm in continuing to follow it.

Yama no Suzume is noted for its strong “Encouragement of Engrish,” yet it presents a more otaku-friendly atmosphere.

Regarding Amnesia, the author states it “could be worse.” Their interest level is comparable to Hakuouki, with the OP/ED being the most notable aspects. They recall a conversation about the otomege adaptation genre still being in its developmental stages, predicting mediocrity for some time and suggesting that a good otome game would be a prerequisite for better adaptations.

Oreshura is highlighted as a good example of how its “genre” has evolved to become more interesting with each iteration. The author finds it has more substance compared to shows like Oniai, though they acknowledge some viewers might prefer the latter.

Ai Mai Mi is mentioned, with the author stating they prefer Tekyuu slightly more and clarifying it’s not Strawberry Eggs.

For Da Capo III, the author has no strong opinion at this point, but comments on Ms. Charles “Ruru-nee” Yoshino’s distinctive “Ruru-nee-esqe” presence.

THE UNLIMITED Hyoubu Kyousuke is described as fun, but the author warns that viewers expecting something different might not enjoy it. Having dropped Zettai Karen Children previously, the author went into Hyoubu Kyousuke expecting worse and was pleasantly surprised. They feel it aligns well with its Manglobe association.

Osaka-Okan is mentioned in relation to the earlier comment about short anime the author plans to watch. They speculate it might be the standout short anime of the 2013 winter season and question why an Osaka native isn’t voicing the Osaka immigrant character, finding Asumiss’s attempt humorous.

Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman is called “wholesome fun,” but the author believes it will become tiring quickly unless it introduces something interesting soon. They admit they are not typically a big fan of era pieces.

Ishida & Asakura is met with a simple “Ha.” The author found it not particularly funny and it reminded them that they never finished Cromartie, acknowledging that the show, to its credit, is a short anime.

Minami-ke Tadaima prompts the author to recall why they stopped watching the series, though they note it’s “not bad though.”

Tamako Market is characterized as cute, fuwafuwa, and made of gohan, with “no curry.” The bird, Dera, is considered the redeeming feature, likened to a lotus filling in expensive wagashi. The anime is described as “bleeding sakuga kyun-ness.” As an original work, the author admits weakness, not expecting much but anticipating an overindulgent experience at worst, and at best, Dera rivaling a legendary figure from the 12th century.

Sasami-san@ganbaranai is identified as potentially the author’s most anticipated and favorite anime of the season. Despite it being early to say, the author notes that in typical Shinbo style, it checks all their “fetishes boxes.” The only issue is hearing the 765pro Shacho voice whenever Onii-chan speaks.

GJ-bu is deemed “okay,” but the author doubts viewers would miss much by skipping it and is unsure if they will continue watching.

Kotoura-san is praised for making a strong statement, despite the “emotional whiplash.” The author can debate its execution but plans to enjoy the light-hearted comedy.

Vividred Operation is lamented as not being from SUNRISE in a way that redefines the studio. However, it is credited with having the “best magical pet concept yet.”

Mondaiji tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru soudesuyo, or “Problem Children are Coming from Another World, aren’t they?”, is referred to as “Mondaiji.” The author finds it “okay,” suspecting that the bunnies contribute to their liking the show more when they are not actively watching it, which might lead them to drop it.

PuchiM@S is anticipated to be a marathon watch, described as “exactly the kind of crap anime for sad folks like me.”

The author intends to try other series as well, such as 2GD2GT, with the exception of AKB0048.

A postscript mentions that the author pseudo-dropped Koichoco halfway through and intends to finish it.
