UlasanAnime.com – The notion that anime fans, often referred to as “otaku,” are inherently elitist is a confusing one. Similarly, the idea that watching anime is inherently deep or shallow is a perspective that warrants closer examination.

While the topic of elitism could be explored at length, this meta-blogging attempt aims to share some personal viewpoints in the hope of illuminating the broader context.
As bloggers of anime, manga, games, or any other fandom, our writing often falls into one of two categories: editorial commentary or chronicling the fan experiences that shape our lives. It’s about translating our concerns, however abstract, into concrete words. This could range from analyzing the impact of a character’s physical attributes on personal feelings.

This process can be challenging, as we endeavor to articulate intangible elements like emotions, intricate social dynamics, industry insights, and novel ideas. It’s highly probable that the average anime blogger, let alone the typical fan or otaku, lacks the formal training to effectively accomplish this. I certainly don’t possess it.

However, when some of the most dedicated and passionate fans (those who pour their hearts into their interests) deeply contemplate and obsess over their desires – for instance, how a character’s physique influences fans, its unexpected connection to a fast-food chain, or its potential to inspire a specific genre of fan-created content for an upcoming convention – it’s hard not to acknowledge their profound understanding of their chosen obsessions.
The common pitfall, for both the ardent fan and the detached observer, is misinterpreting the subject matter. It’s natural for a newcomer to anime to draw comparisons with more familiar media like live-action television or other animated series. While some comparisons may be valid, others are often made solely to support a particular argument, such as labeling a character as one-dimensional or condemning fan-subbing as piracy. Occasionally, these comparisons stem from implicit prejudice; it can be easy to target anime enthusiasts. Other times, the root cause is a fear of the unfamiliar or simply innocent ignorance. Conversely, some of the most fervent anime fans might instinctively defend anime based on its inherent qualities, driven by a reactive impulse to perceived criticism. This defensiveness would be understandable if they were indeed well-informed about the subject.
From my own experiences, which have undoubtedly included my share of nonsensical pronouncements, I’ve observed that hardcore fans often lack a true understanding because they conflate the substance of a discussion with its underlying message. I believe this stems from an honest failure to recognize the true nature of their obsessions. It’s akin to someone deeply appreciating an anime without knowing anything about its production, budget, or the individuals behind its writing and direction, yet still being considered an otaku because they’ve integrated it into their lives in a conventionally recognized way. For example, someone might adore a character like C.C. but remain ignorant of CLAMP, Ichiro Okouchi, or Yukana, yet still produce suggestive fan fiction about C.C. Conversely, a devoted fan of Yukana might be unaware of a specific character she voiced.
Instead of perpetuating these issues, I believe we all need to mature somewhat and adopt a more collaborative and friendly approach. Mutual respect is paramount. In this context, respect involves treating your online peers with the same consideration you’d afford yourself, at least initially. Extend the same courtesy and assume their competence is equal to your own. Strive to understand how to communicate effectively and decipher the true meaning behind their words – what is the intangible essence they are trying to convey? Engage with them thoughtfully rather than dismissively. We are all part of a larger community, partly due to our shared, and perhaps unified, interest in this distinctly Japanese form of entertainment.
And in this particular sphere, the allure of characters like C.C. undeniably captivates a large audience, and it’s undeniably compelling.
