Never Running Out of Things to Say

While I cannot definitively claim this about Makoto Shinkai, this is precisely how he presented himself during a nearly half-hour reading of the extensive interview found on the 5cm DVD (specifically, the R1 release from ADV!). He did not meander; in fact, his responses appeared well-rehearsed, as if he had pre-considered his answers to the open-ended questions typically posed in such interviews.

What was particularly striking was the same level of detailed attentiveness evident in his creative works. This wasn’t so much about the animation itself but rather the degree of control he exerted over the entire production, which conveyed a sense of his clear vision and purpose – what he aimed to communicate to his audience and the precise methods he intended to use.

I will refrain from simply repeating his statements from the interview, but I can mention that there was even a moment that evoked the spirit of a “lolcat.”

Despite its well-planned nature, it seemed as though he was not relying on pre-written notes, allowing his speech to flow naturally. The interview was edited for brevity in certain sections as he addressed various points to answer questions. He provided concise answers to frequently asked questions, such as inquiries about whether his stories were autobiographical. However, more descriptive questions concerning the production of 5cm received much more elaborate responses.

His transition from his daily routine as an office worker, which served as his inspiration, to a lifestyle where a hobby evolved into a full-time career is a narrative that could potentially be the subject of its own film.

In essence, while some advertisers might be quick to proclaim Shinkai as the successor to Miyazaki, I perceive him as someone who has simply perfected storytelling within a very specific stylistic framework. It is possible that the contemporary media industry is experiencing a deficit of individuals skilled in narrative construction, particularly in this distinct style. Ultimately, it will be up to him to judiciously combine his talents, dedication, and the pursuit of the story he feels compelled to share with us. This quest will be the defining prerequisite for his truly monumental work.

Nevertheless, I find myself with an abundance of thoughts and observations regarding 5cm. It undeniably resonated deeply with me, and indeed with many others, much like the works of Satoshi Kon (who is also an exceptionally detail-oriented creator). The film is brimming with content, making it a lengthy process to fully unpack everything it contains. Shinkai has also managed to make this discovery process an enjoyable one. In light of the new offerings for Spring 2008, I remain largely ambivalent, especially when considering the impact of a year-old film that runs just a little over an hour.

During moments of introspection and self-reflection, works like 5cm serve as a crucial source of support, reaffirming that there are indeed aspects worth celebrating as a fan within this industry.

And 5cm conveys this sentiment with remarkable simplicity and conciseness.
