Ultimately, it will be up to him to judiciously combine his talents, dedication, and the pursuit of the story he feels compelled to share with us. Nevertheless, I find myself with an abundance of thoughts and observations regarding 5cm. It undeniably resonated deeply with me, and indeed with many others, much like the works of Satoshi Kon (who is also an exceptionally detail-oriented creator). The film is brimming with content, making it a lengthy process to fully unpack everything it contains. Shinkai has also managed to make this discovery process an enjoyable one. In light of the new offerings for Spring 2008, I remain largely ambivalent, especially when considering the impact of a year-old film that runs just a little over an hour.
During moments of introspection and self-reflection, works like 5cm serve as a crucial source of support, reaffirming that there are indeed aspects worth celebrating as a fan within this industry.
And 5cm conveys this sentiment with remarkable simplicity and conciseness.
