The Internet's Junk Pile, May 6, 2013

John from Ask John has finally addressed a peculiar entry in the Wikipedia article for “Risky Safety.” AN Entertainment, a now-defunct licensing company associated with the Florida-based anime store AnimeNation, had licensed “Risky & Safety,” “Miami Guns,” and “Hare Guu.” A snarky joke was inserted into the “Risky & Safety” Wikipedia page in late 2011, which was later removed in early 2012. The author expresses surprise at any negative sentiment towards “Risky Safety,” likening it to “kicking a puppy,” and notes John’s blog often serves as an unofficial voice for AN.

Arudoc’s Kickstarter campaign to translate “Little Witch’s Romanesqe” was unfortunately hit with a DMCA takedown. The author finds it interesting that “LW’s HQ is in Koto, Tokyo.” This situation is presented as a point of mental contemplation, though slightly less engaging than ZUN’s perceived hesitation to release his games commercially. The original launch post on Arudoc’s blog details the key elements, essentially stating the project was illegal. The involvement of money intensifies scrutiny, leading to DMCA actions. Kickstarter is deemed too high-profile for potentially infringing fan projects, and the concept of fair use is critiqued as a euphemism for illegality.

The author suggests Arudoc operated with a “if it’s not stopped, it’ll go ahead” mentality, which contributes to the internet’s rampant copyright infringement. While this approach might be acceptable to some, it inevitably leads to being stopped. The author acknowledges Arudoc’s effort as a step in the right direction, albeit a misstep. It appears Arudoc attempted to contact “legit” parties, but “LW” declined the game’s porting, possibly due to concerns about piracy. Analyzing “LW’s” claims about localized games increasing piracy, even in their home country, is deemed too much work. More credit would be given to Arudoc if a specific monetary figure that “LW” might consider was presented. The author points out that using Kickstarter as an “improved donation system” is a “half-assed” approach, and donations for piracy are inherently shady.
