Winter 2013 Weeks 7-8

The Civilization Blaster kids

Shinsekai Yori Episode 21 delivers a heavy, painful, yet drama-filled experience. It’s steeped in faint hopes, antagonism, despair, and a palpable sense of loss. The watermill sequence was particularly brilliant, and the visual of writing in the sky added a cool, memorable touch, making one wonder why such techniques aren’t used more frequently. The babies, thankfully, were not as grotesque as they could have been.

The episode masterfully revealed a key character, initially fooling the viewer before settling into a “worst-case scenario” outcome that felt both unexpected and inevitable. The chronological order of events made perfect sense, leading to a conclusion that, while foreshadowed, felt powerless to resist.

Zetsuen no Tempest Episode 20 delves into complex chronology, hinting at a significant clue that was present but perhaps overlooked. Discussing the latter half of Tempest without spoiling the first presents a challenge. The introduction of a character with a new power, and their brief mention of its manifestation timeline, served as a crucial hint. This clue lingered in the back of my mind during discussions about the show’s plot logic, though the full implication wasn’t immediately grasped. The anticipation of a specific character’s actions was high, but the execution was surprisingly impactful and delightful, a surprise best experienced firsthand.

Zetsuen no Tempest is shaping up to be an exceptionally enjoyable watch. Praising it without spoilers is difficult, but at its core, it’s a narrative driven by plot logic. The story revolves around defined boundary conditions that characters must navigate, akin to a game of Clue where relationships and motives are deciphered. Character development is minimal, with the exception of the character who begins the story deceased.

The developing character adds another layer of greatness to Tempest. It’s a touch of romanticism, embodied by the Shakespeare-quoting girlfriend who fuels a revenge plot. This character’s presence contrasts with the story’s logic, much like a piece of a puzzle that rationally depicts irrationality. She acts as an ultimate lampshade, a concept borrowed from TVTropes, which itself draws from Shakespeare. In essence:

This element holds significant thematic weight within the story. Unfortunately, despite its adventurous facade, it’s not purely an adventure anime. It’s a show where characters attempt to unravel a mystery rooted in what feels like “magic.” Without investment, it can seem trite, and one can empathize with the character of Samon, who bears the brunt of these complexities.

gdgd season 2 Episode 8 is lauded as the best episode of the season. A prerequisite for full appreciation involves understanding the “Prereq thing to watch,” which can be explored through reading about Daigo Umehara’s dramatic comeback at Evolution 2004 or its TL;DR version. Familiarity with games like Monster Hunter or Mario Kart can also enhance the viewing experience, though it’s not strictly necessary.

Da Capo III Episode 8 evokes a hesitant “Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah?” It prompts a question: what if Senren Kagura were like this? Thankfully, Senren Kagura is not. It has been a considerable time since watching an episode of Baywatch, but this episode shares a certain resemblance.

Vividred Operation Episodes 7-8 showcase the power of friendship through a sweet set of jets. Akane “gives you wings,” and Vividred Operation delivers much more, including fireworks, drama, and poignant hospital scenes. It was, truly, a self-titled sign of its themes.

Vividred Operation... lol

Runner-ups:

The Unlimited: Hyoubu Kyousuke Episode 8 concludes an anticipated flashback arc. While perhaps a slight let-down, it effectively served its purpose.

Seitokai no Ichizon Lv.2 Episode 7 marks Ringo’s proper introduction for those following the series. It serves as a reminder of her character if viewers recall her from previous installments.
