In an ideal anime landscape, Nyaruko-san would undoubtedly be the most influential and widely acclaimed series airing. It masterfully blends elements of board gaming, the Cthulhu mythos, moe harem tropes, and an astonishing, almost overwhelming, number of pop culture references spanning from the 1960s onwards. The series caters to a diverse audience, incorporating BL, yuri, straight relationships, and even more unconventional dynamics. It’s difficult to fathom why such a multifaceted anime wouldn’t achieve universal appeal. Astonishingly, it manages to deliver an immense density of references without resorting to cliché elements like chalkboard gags. The show features fanservice, and more importantly, it includes characters who are genuine fans of pop culture, making the references feel organic. While it might not contain absolutely everything, it certainly offers far more than most anime available today.
The question then arises: why isn’t Nyaruko-san achieving its full potential? The answer lies in a poignant observation: Nyaruko-san is the anime we deserve, but perhaps not the one we truly need at this moment.
