UlasanAnime.com – As 2006 drew to a close, a strong regret emerged for not highlighting Renkin 3-kyuu Magical Pokaan sooner as a must-watch anime.

The issue is quite straightforward. To illustrate, let’s look back. Many are aware that Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu is arguably one of Kyoto Animation’s most acclaimed works. Even more so than the SOS Brigade, this series was pivotal in establishing the studio’s reputation. While most agree it’s a masterful comedy that faithfully adapts its source material, it’s rarely mentioned among fans’ favorite or even top-tier anime.
This highlights a lack of appreciation for the sketch comedy format. It’s as if the typical anime fan lacks a sense of humor.
While I’m not keen on testing that theory, Magical Pokaan is precisely the kind of show that inspires laughter and the declaration of it being the best anime of the year. However, its rather risqué nature quickly silences such pronouncements.

Indeed, Magical Pokaan masterfully blends innocent, cute elements with sinister, low-brow humor in a tense package of goth-loli, loli, and pure comedic absurdity. It’s a challenging watch because some of its gags are incredibly funny, yet it’s also uncomfortable due to its inappropriate content. The series cherishes archetypes and pandering while simultaneously wielding idealism like a weapon, posing the question, “Do you expect me to talk?”
Pachira might then hold up a sign stating, “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to GIVE ME BLOOD.”
This series stands out as one of the best gag anime seen in recent years. Hopefully, 2007 will offer equally strong contenders.
