The initial promotional material for Fate/Zero sparked some concern, particularly regarding the portrayal of Alexander the Great, known as Iskander in the series. The dynamic between Iskander and Waver Velvet is a highlight of Fate/Zero, and there was a strong hope that the anime adaptation would successfully capture its charisma.
In many minds, Alexander the Great is a figure who achieved greatness and died young, at the age of 33. While life expectancies were lower in that era, individuals surviving childhood could often expect to live into their forties. This youthful demise contrasts with Western popular depictions of Alexander, who is often envisioned as a mature, perhaps even middle-aged, figure rather than the youthful Greek ideal or a rugged mountain dweller. This discrepancy could lead to some awkwardness if he were to engage in modern activities like playing video games.
Furthermore, Alexander the Great is renowned as a brilliant military strategist. His undefeated record in battle is legendary, solidifying his place among history’s greatest generals. It remains to be seen if the anime accurately reflects this aspect of his background.
Perhaps most crucially, Alexander’s ability to unite vast conquered territories was largely attributed to his immense charisma. The anime appears to draw heavily on this trait for Iskander’s character, with his bold pronouncements of world domination. While these claims might seem outlandish, the narrative context allows them to be humorously effective. By presenting Waver as a naive and bumbling academic, the overall dynamic works, but he might appear somewhat too soft-hearted. Even characters like Azaka Kokutou might have outmatched him, and Waver’s past as a Mage at the Clock Tower suggests a greater inherent capability.
