Akira’s light novel adaptation, brought to life by the distinctive animation studio Shaft and director Shinbo, undoubtedly stands as one of the most eccentric TV anime productions in recent memory. The series ventures into such unconventional territory that, at times, Shinbo seems to have adopted a more straightforward approach to prevent alienating the audience entirely. This might stem from a lack of a shared Shinto cultural foundation, a singular overarching perspective that could anchor the narrative for viewers. It’s a complex challenge, perhaps exacerbated by the inherently Western nature of animation direction clashing with the non-Western essence of Shinto beliefs.

It’s a genuine pity, as this series possesses the potential to captivate those who appreciate delicate and intricate plot concepts. Its non-linear weaving of themes creates a larger tapestry exploring generational disillusionment, the struggles of Japan’s youth, and their complex relationship with preceding generations. While it undeniably showcases the artistic and narrative capabilities of late-night TV anime, it paradoxically doesn’t always feel particularly skillful or evocative in its delivery.

The core issue is that despite Sasami-san@Ganbaranai dazzling the intellect, it may not resonate as deeply with the average viewer as its source material. Unless one is a dedicated anime otaku fascinated by the iterative evolution of the late-night media-mix marketing machine, capable of transforming any light novel into something novel, or seeking an in-depth exploration of postmodern Shinto narratives, the series struggles to fully earn its audience. It is, without question, a special anime that engages the mind in ways few others can, but intellectual engagement alone is insufficient for widespread appeal.

Perhaps the disconnect lies in a personal lack of appreciation for the character archetype often associated with “funyaaa” – a sentiment amplified by the suspicion that Hanazawa Kana might have delivered a phoned-in performance. Similarly, a lack of affinity for the “Asumiss” or a particular fondness for Chiwa Saito voicing a “loli-baba” could contribute. Alternatively, the depiction of Aipon’s Tama might be perceived as too precious to be viewed exploitatively. The plea for assistance from Asa-nee highlights this internal struggle to fully connect with the show’s more niche elements.

It appears that the show reached its zenith in episode 9, a sentiment echoed by discussions of its peak performance. The addition of Edogawa Jou, regrettably, did not seem to contribute significantly to the overall narrative arc.

PS… Beyond her obvious role as a massive fanservice vehicle, her presence remains a point of discussion.
